WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

THE 30 SECOND ELEVATOR SPEECH

An elevator speech is a clear, brief message or “commercial” about you. It communicates who you are, what you’re looking for and how you can benefit a company or organization. It’s typically about 30 seconds, the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator. (The idea behind having an elevator speech is that your are prepared to share this information with anyone, at anytime, even in an elevator.) At a career fair, you can use your speech to introduce yourself to employers. It is important to have your speech memorized and practiced. Rehearse your 20 second elevator speech with a friend or in front of a mirror. The important thing is to practice it OUT LOUD. You want it to sound natural. Get comfortable with what you have to say so you can breeze through it when the time comes.

SENDING BUSINESS EMAILS

Email is still one of the most popular forms of communication in the workplace. It is important for professionals to be able to construct proper messages when emailing. It is incredibly easy to get caught up in the briefness and lack of structure that a texting world may provide. It is crucial for students to understand the difference between emailing and texting world as they begin their journey of becoming professionals.

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP + AUTONOMY

Employers are seeking individuals who can be autonomous in the workplace and take ownership of their own learning, more and more. As companies grow and expand into new regions, employees often do not have the luxury of having a physical space to work, and they must do their job remotely. With these remote positions can come challenges such as learning new systems and skills associated with the position without the direct help of coworkers. This places employees into a challenge where they have to take ownership of their own learning. Today’s workforce calls for employees to be both shelf-reliant and independent to succeed.
